The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that causes HIV infection and goes onto cause AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). HIV can be effectively detected using HIV rapid test kits. Chlamydia is the most common STD within New Zealand with young women being the most at risk. Many individuals experience no symptoms at all and as such are carrying the infection and spreading it without knowing. Chlamydia is an infection caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. This bacteria can be transmitted from during foreplay so using a condom does not guarantee protection. Chlamydia is easily treated and is easy to detect. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the spirochete bacterium which can be easily detected with a rapid test kit. The signs and symptoms of syphilis vary but may include a single chancre (skin ulceration), a diffuse rash which frequently involves the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
